A long time ago. When the world was still new. There were no colors to be seen, only shades of gray. The sun would rise to be a giant ball in a dark sky. And then the night would come with no ceremony. The animals grew weary and the plants became sick. With no color the whole world was dying. The butterflies and bees couldn't tell which flowers to go to get their nectar from. Many animals were dying from eating poisons accidentally.
The Creator took notice of these things and was not happy. So a palette of colors was made and each plant and animal got to choose it's coloration. Even the rocks and earth had their choice. Now flowers were being properly pollinated, the insects were eating healthy, and all poisonous plants and animals were specifically colored to warn of their danger. Finally when all things on the planet had been given a chance, it was time for the sky. But when the Creator went up into the heavens, the sky wouldn't choose. The Creator tried and tried to get the sky to pick a color, but still it remained silent.
Some time went by and the Creator noticed that each color gave off a certain feeling. Romance often surrounded red. And the deep green jungles were the most wild. Each colored thing held attributes of the colors it was made of. So the Creator went back to the sky and tried to see what personality was present so that the colors could be chosen. But the sky would give no hint of it's thoughts or wishes. It only sat there switching the sun and moon to pass the time.
The Creator was confused as to why the sky wouldn't choose or help to pick a color. And the palette could see the ordeal as well. Each color began to talk and formulate an idea. Purple, being the leader, went to the Creator to tell of their plan. They had unanimously decided that a race should be run to chose what color the sky would be.
The route was to be along the planet's belly. The first one to go around the world and end where it began would win. So the race began, many colors got tired early on and quit. But the others kept moving. After a while only seven colors remained; purple, green, red, blue, black, orange, and white.
When the finish line was right ahead red was leading followed by white and purple, with green, orange, black and blue in the back. Well, red and white had fallen in love and decided to forget the race and go get married, leaving purple in the lead. Green got jealous and tripped purple making orange mad, so orange tackled green. Blue and black had to zig zag across the path to miss falling over the other colors. Black noticed red and white had left and became sad that he had never found his one true color. Lost in his troubled thoughts black didn't notice that the world had started cheering. Blue had crossed the finish line.
The Creator picked blue up to finally give color to the sky, when blue whispered something. The Creator smiled and gathered the six other colors and brought them all to the sky. Black became the color of the night, when memories become strongest. Purple wanted to comfort black so she is seen right before and right after black hugging him. Red and white had joined together creating pink, who became friends with green and orange who follow purple through the day. That left only blue. You see, blue had told the Creator that the other colors were all in front of him and that if it weren't for their nature he would have finished last. For being so humble, the Creator gave blue the entire daylight time in the sky. Letting all know who truly won, yet still allowing the others to share the sky in their own time.
